H. Herndon Murray, M.D., joined Peachtree Orthopedics when it merged with Atlanta Orthopaedic Associates in 1997. He is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.

BIO

EDUCATION & TRAINING

Dr. Murray attended the University of the South (Sewanee) and the University of Georgia. Following his junior year, he was admitted to Tulane University School of Medicine. He received his M.D. from Tulane, where he received a Mosby Award for Scholastic Excellence. His orthopedic residency was at Georgia Baptist Hospital in Atlanta, including training at the University of Southern California/Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center for care of spinal cord injuries, and at Atlanta’s Scottish Rite Children’s Hospital in pediatric orthopedics.

H. Herndon Murray, M.D. is currently the Medical Director of orthopedics at Atlanta’s Shepherd Center, where he has been involved since it opened in 1975. He is also a Board certified orthopedic partner at Peachtree Orthopedics.

He has served on many local, national, and international medical committees. He has been president of both the Atlanta Orthopaedic Society and the Georgia Orthopaedic Society. He was also appointed chairman of the regional and national admissions committees for the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, and for 18 years he wrote and edited written exam questions for the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery written exam committee. He is currently a committee chairman on the injury prevention committee of the International Spine Cord Society.

In 2015, Dr. Murray co-authored two chapters in the textbook “Comprehensive Management of Spinal Cord Injuries,” and he has given presentations on spinal cord injuries in America, Canada, Europe, Africa and Asia.

For more than two decades, Dr. Murray has instructed orthopedic surgery residents through rotations at Atlanta Medical Center and at Grady Hospital, where he was a clinical assistant professor at Emory.

Dr. Murray has been recognized as a Top Doctor by both U.S. News & World Report magazine and Castle Connolly, and in 2016, received the William Waters Award for Clinical Excellence from Piedmont Hospital.
